The Mayans Argumentative Essay Example For Students

The Mayans Argumentative Essay The old Maya were a gathering of American Indian people groups who lived in southern Mexico, especially the present-day conditions of Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo, and in Belize, Guatemala, and neighboring Honduras. Their relatives, the cutting edge Maya, live in similar locales today, in the two good countries and marshes, from cool high country fields ringed by springs of gushing lava to profound tropical downpour timberlands. Through the area runs a solitary significant waterway framework, the Apasion-Usumacinta and its numerous tributaries, and just a bunch of lesser streams, the Motagua, Hondo, and Belize among them. The progenitors of the Maya, similar to those of other New World people groups, crossed the Bering Land Bridge from Asia over 20,000 years back, during the last ice age. The Maya were the primary individuals of the New World to keep authentic records: their recorded history starts in 50 BC, when they started to write messages on pots, jades, bones, stone landmarks, and royal residence dividers. Maya records follow the historical backdrop of the extraordinary lords and sovereigns who governed from 50 BC until the Spanish victory in the sixteenth century. Throughout the entire Maya tally schedule engravings fall between AD 292 and AD 909, generally characterizing the period called Classic. Prior Maya culture is called Formative or Preclassic (2000 BC-AD 300), and resulting human advancement is known as Postclassic (AD 900-success). Secured by troublesome landscape and overwhelming vegetation, the vestiges of scarcely any antiquated Maya urban areas were known before the nineteenth century, when wayfarers and archeologists started to rediscover them. The age and multiplication of Maya compositions have been perceived since around 1900, when the calendrical substance ofMaya hieroglyphic engravings were deciphered and the dates connected with the Christian schedule. For the vast majority of the twentieth century, just the br oad calendrical information of Maya engravings could be perused, and accordingly, Maya researchers theorized that the engravings were unadulterated calendrical records. Since little proof of fighting had been perceived archeologically, the Classic Maya were thought of as tranquil timekeepers and skywatchers. Their urban communities, it was thought, were formal habitats for austere ministers, and their work of art mysterious, without worry for explicit people. Later grant changes the image significantly. In 1958 Heinrich Berlin exhibited that specific Maya symbolic representations, which he called insignia glyphs, contained fundamental signs that differed by area, showing dynastic lines or spot names. In 1960, Tatiana Proskouriakoff indicated that the examples of dates were markers of the significant occasions in rulers lives. The ordered record ended up serving history and the propagation of the memory of extraordinary nobles. Thusly, major archeological disclosures, especially at P alenque and Tikal, affirmed quite a bit of what the compositions stated, and assessment of Maya workmanship has uncovered authentic likeness as well as a pantheon of divine beings, goddesses, and heroesin different words, Maya religion and mythic history. By 5000 BC, the Maya had settled along Caribbean and Pacific coasts, framing libertarian angling networks. Surely by 2000 BC the Maya had likewise moved inland and embraced agribusiness for their means. Maize and beans shaped the Maya diet then as today, albeit numerous other foodstuffssquash, tomatoes, peppers, natural products, and gamewere supplements. The word for maizewais equivalent with food itself, and the maize god was regarded from early occasions. At some point around the finish of the Classic Period, the Maya were separated into free city-states. The nobles of these city-states intermarried and battled against one another. This common war, alongside the ongoing change in their arrangement of government, prompted the decrease of the incomparable Mayan Empire and at last, its destruction. List of sources:

Fixation on Imagination An Investigation into the Necessity of Personal Deception in Clock Without Hands - Literature Essay Samples

Many people, especially Southerners, willingly deceive themselves when referring to race relations or the way we remember the past by voicing their opinions in the form of â€Å"It was not that bad during segregation† or â€Å"The Civil War was fought over state’s rights.† In her novel Clock Without Hands, Carson McCullers explores themes typically found in Southern literature such as family, tradition, and race relations through the interactions of Judge Clane, Jester Clane, Sherman Pew, and J.T. Malone while also exposing the toxicity that comes with denying reality. Though born in Georgia, McCullers herself, due to severe depression and homosexuality, had an unusual relationship with the social norms of the South. She expresses this personal disparity through the traits of some of the characters in the novel. However, she also delves with surprising clarity into the often purposefully obscured realm of imagination. This layer of depth adds insight not only to the characters’ personalities but also to their relationships to the social environment of the 1950’s South. In presenting characters’ idealized scenarios for the past, present, and future in contrast with the reality of their world in Milan, Georgia, McCullers demonstrates the necessity of personal deception which develops through imagining an alternate reality, planning based on said imagination, changing relationships because of it, and eventually accepting the imagined world as the real one. Through the four main characters, the author traces the path of this process of deception from its inception to its consequences to demonstrate the futility of refusing to accept reality. J.T. Malone, possibly the most relatable character of the novel because of his sadly all too familiar prognosis, escapes into his imagination to distract from the pressing and forced recognition of his own mortality as well as the regret he feels for living a passive life. However, he only demonstrates the first portion of the process of deception because, in the end, he acknowledges his reality. Initially, reprieve from thoughts of both death and regret come to him in the form of â€Å"daydreaming†¦that in the autumn he was going to a northern country†¦. alone without Mrs. Malone† (130). The word â€Å"alone† holds significance regarding imagination because only the person doing the imagining can truly immerse himself in his imagined world. One can explain that world to someone else, but the other person will never truly understand the picture one wants to paint. McCullers use of this word highlights the idea that Malone’s future life is purely imagina ry because he must encounter it alone. Per human nature, no one enjoys ruminating on his or her own impending death, so while the futility of Malone’s avoidance of this looming event is recognizable to readers, it is also understandable in that we know we will have to address it in our own lives eventually. Malone also uses this imagined getaway to provide self-restitution for a life he feels he has not lived to the fullest. In fantasizing about finally living out his ideal life, Malone diverts his thoughts from his present situation. McCullers’ relation to the dying pharmacist also comes from her personal life. A sickly, depressed woman, the author likely had thoughts about death comparable to Malone’s at some point and may have used similar coping methods considering writing involves significant amounts of imagination. In the end though, McCullers uses J.T. Malone’s acceptance of his own death to highlight that no matter what someone may imagine to the point of deception, reality will follow its course. Judge Clane, whose imagination functions as a beacon of hope and validation for him in the progressing reality that rapidly frustrates him, exemplifies a further progression into deception than J.T. because he attempts to make plans based on his own imagination. In response to the sentiment that the Federal Government should â€Å"redress [the] historical and monumental wrong† of ending slavery and granting blacks rights, the Judge decidedly states that if he wins the next election, he will â€Å"have a bill introduced†¦that will redeem all Confederate monies† (37). As an extremely prejudiced old man raised in a society that glorified and supported people like him, the Judge truly cannot grapple with the possibility that his culture could shift away from the established set of norms. He eagerly crafts and develops an idea that he allows himself to believe can â€Å"turn back the clock for a hundred years† (161). McCullers easily could have opted for the word ing â€Å"turn back time,† but instead writes â€Å"clock† which evokes the title of the novel. On a clock without hands, one literally cannot turn back time. The author mocks Judge Clane’s deceptive conviction that he can accomplish the impossible through her word choice and both Jester and Sherman’s immediate discrediting of the idea. By portraying the Judge as a character with an imagination bordering on laughable delusion, the author defames others who seek his same goals. In the end of the novel, when Judge Clane attempts to give a speech on his disagreement with Brown v. Board, he instead recites the Gettysburg Address and experiences a â€Å"shock of recognition [that makes] him crumble† (241). Though the Judge plans and acts based on his ideal imagined scenario, he ultimately recognizes the reality of the world he inhabits much to his dismay. McCullers uses Judge Clane to illustrate that the world will attempt to jolt someone back into real ity when his imagination becomes too out of line. Jester Clane’s imagination arguably disappoints and saddens the most in that it disguises itself as the simplest and most innocent of the four characters when in truth it speaks most to the cruel role of personal deception in perpetuating the institution of racism in Southern culture. Jester alters his relationships based on his imagining of himself as different from the typical Southern white young man when realistically, his picture of himself holds no weight. Throughout the novel, Jester makes a significant effort to befriend Sherman. However, Sherman, despite his inner desires to have a close confidant, rebuffs him consistently, even to the point of asking Jester â€Å"What makes you think you’re a friend?† (142). This question serves two purposes for McCullers. First, it signifies that the relationship represents a complete reversal of the norms of their society. However, it also slyly hints that Jester’s assumption of the validity of their friendship might need reevaluation. The author eventually reveals Jester’s vision of he and Sherman as true comrades as falsified and futile when he muses that â€Å"his odyssey of friendship, love, and revenge was now finished† (234). McCullers could have described Jester and Sherman’s relationship as a â€Å"journey† or a â€Å"trial.† Instead, she opts for â€Å"odyssey,† which as the origin of the word might suggest, denotes a more fantastical and fairytale-like peregrination than a realistic one. Sammy Lank murders Sherman, Jester’s proposed â€Å"best friend,† the day prior and Jester accepts and brushes off the fact that Lank thinks he is proud of him for killing Sherman; Jester has almost no qualms letting his relationship with Sherman go a single day after his death. Throughout the novel, Jester imagines himself as a progressive young man that desires equality, but in the end, he releases Sherman’s presence in his life as easily as he drops the pistol out of the plane (233). He only wants Sherman as a friend for the novelty of it so that he could smoothly imagine himself as the social justice advocate he wants to be. In the reality of Jester’s privileged and peaceful life, Sherman occupies an insignificant and immemorable place that only serves as a means to an end of a vision of racial justice and not an end in himself as a human. Jester delves deep into his imagination in that he creates a relationship on his assumption of its validity, but when the world tests him after Sherman dies, he relinquishes it easily to the acceptance of reality. Among the four main characters, Sherman undeniably possesses the most vivid and intricate imagination which he utilizes to cope with the ambiguity of his position in society and the repercussions of this vagueness. However, this full emersion in imagination in due course brings demise for Sherman because he wholly deceives himself into accepting his imagined world as reality. Throughout his life, Sherman has crafted storylines to explain his peculiar lack of parentage, and this habit reaches its culmination when Jester suggests that the famous singer Marian Anderson may be Sherman’s mystery mother (78). Sherman consumes himself with the investigation into and fantasizing of the possibility of this woman as his mother. In his 1950’s southern environment, the concept of the â€Å"nuclear family† dominated everyday life; if one did not belong to such a unit, others viewed one as lacking and peculiar. Sherman exists on almost the exact opposite end of the familial sp ectrum in his lack of parents and the known but unspoken miscegenation of those parental figures. In her own life, McCullers positioned herself, perhaps purposefully, outside of the â€Å"nuclear family† archetype as well. As a divorced woman and unconsummated lesbian, the author could emphasize with and reflect on her perception in society through Sherman. Sherman so willingly wants to fill in the gaps of his existence that he tries to merge imagination with reality. As evidenced when â€Å"he [takes] down his records†¦sung by Marian Anderson and [stomps] on them† after he receives confirmation that she could not be his mother (144), Sherman identifies so much with his own imagined scenarios that allow him to conform to societal standards that he deceives himself into treating them as reality. Uncovering his true lineage and the identity of the person responsible for his lack of a mother and father provokes Sherman to step out of the realm of imagination and test his perceived place in society. He first defies race expectations in small ways, but when these actions do not produce the commotion he envisions such as multiple people noticing him, he moves into a house in a white neighborhood (218). When Sherman knowingly makes this conscious and planned decision, one could assume that he makes the choice aware of potential repercussions. However, when confronted by Jester with the news that townsmen will bomb his home, Sherman exclaims that â€Å"it’s not going to happen! I have invited guests with RSVP invitations to a housewarming party† (227). He cannot cope with the harsh and violent reality of the situation he has placed himself in and thus must slip back into the deceptive notion of an alternate reality. Through Sherman’s imagination, McCullers forc es the recognition that the racist sentiment of the South was so pervasive that sometimes the only way for a colored person to dispel its damaging effects was to imagine the social environment differently. In the end though, this culmination of the process of deception results in Sherman’s death and serves as a warning of the futility of relying on imagination to transport one from reality. Using personal deception to bridge the gap between the worlds that the characters want to live in and the reality of Milan, Georgia in the 1950’s almost never brings any positive consequences for the characters. Clock Without Hands’ masterful incorporation of imagination in forms varying from mostly harmless distraction to full immersion in a false reality advances the refutation of the possibility that someone can fight against or move beyond the regular progress of time . McCullers uses the concept of the dissonance between imagination and reality to highlight the notions that the pervasive racism of the time came with serious emotional effects for blacks and that one cannot simply opt out of this reality. Through the use of Judge Clane and J.T. Malone, she also emphasizes the almost laughable tragedy of refusing to recognize a future reality. Though McCullers needed a vivid imagination to succeed as a writer, in this novel she warns us that trying to force the merger of one’s own imagined world and the real world can create many more problems than it can solve.

Diabetes A Classification Of Metabolic Disorders

Diabetes is a classification of metabolic disorders that lead to hyperglycemia. The patient’s metabolism is impaired due to a lack of insulin secretion, or impaired insulin function. Insulin is one of the major components in metabolism of glucose- the body’s primary energy source. Alterations in insulin function lead to alterations in utilization of the glucose stores and cellular function as the body is unable to begin glucose metabolism, leading to a buildup of glucose in the serum. Unmanaged diabetes can lead to a high number of complications, ranging from ocular, renal, neuronal, and vascular. The primary classifications of diabetes include Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 and Gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is a lack of insulin production. Commonly this is autoimmune, and the body produces antibodies that destroy the specially designed cells in the pancreas, beta cells, that are responsible for insulin production. Type 2 diabetes on the other hand is due to decreased insulin production, and insulin resistant cells. Under normal circumstances, insulin triggers a shift in glucose, moving it from the bloodstream to the cell where it can be metabolized for ATP. In type 2 diabetes, cells no longer respond to insulin. In both cases, there is a buildup of glucose in the bloodstream. Type 1 diabetes is most commonly seen in younger people, though it is not unlikely to see latent autoimmune diabetes in adults. The risk factors for developing type one diabetes include genetics,Show MoreRelatedObesity : A Serious Medical Condition876 Words   |  4 PagesObesity is a serious medical condition that requires treatment to lower the risk of metabolic and cardiovascular disorders. Over The Years Many Feminists Have Sculpted What The...

Over the years many feminists have sculpted what the definition of rape culture is. This term aims to shine a light on the different ways in which society has shifted blame from perpetrator to victims of sexual assault and in doing so, normalized male sexual violence. This is a complex set of beliefs developed within society that encourage male superiority and sexual aggression. This is dangerous because it creates an atmosphere where violence against women is supported. We, as a society, need to be more conscious about our values and ideals. We need to not only be aware of what is going on, but also stand up and see it for what it truly is. A big component to the prominence of rape culture is cultural factors themselves. In the â€Å"Sexual†¦show more content†¦Personally, I religiously follow music and other forms of entertainment such as television shows and movies. The following will depict how such forms of entertainment have pushed rape culture and in turn influenced my life and the lives of those around me. On a daily basis we are presented with media and forms of entertainment which glorify rape culture. Today’s society often criticizes rap music for explicit language and content. However, rape culture can be found in every genre of music. For example pop music, specifically Robin Thicke’s song, â€Å"Blurred Lines† although highly recognized and celebrated it also promotes the challenging of â€Å"blurred lines† around sexual consent between participants. The popularity of this song is a clear example of society is willing to tolerate rape culture. It even goes to the extent of making it sexy and cool to be part of the group who normalizes these cultural trends. I decided to point this specific song out because just last week as I drove my sister to her elementary school, I noticed her mindlessly singing along to the song. Of course, she doesn’t fully understand what the lyrics mean or what message is being sent across. However, that is the problem. The fact that rape culture is everywhere and we’ve become so desensitized that we don’t even notice it. My sister will grow up having songs like â€Å"blurred lines† pushed her way. This will most certainly shape how and what values and morals she develops. We can also take a

Judge`s Wife By Allende Essays - Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein

Judge`s Wife By Allende In "The Judge's Wife" the author, Isabel Allende, uses a variety of techniques to make full use of the limited space within her short story. By using strong imagery, providing a background, providing believable human actions, and examining justice, M. Allende creates a piece readers can understand to the point of empathy. Because her short story examines human behavior in respect to passions, justice, and emotion (love) in a plausible manner one can find close similarities between her work and that of Mary Shelly's Frankenstein. The author makes use of imagery to embellish not only upon her environment, but also her characters. M. Allende presents the ideas of corruption, innocence, and strictness simply through well-selected adjectives that lend eloquently to the descriptions of her characters. The strait laced judge being "...dressed formally in black ... and his boots always shone with bees wax " (Allende, 422). One can infer by details such as those that that particular individual appreciates formality, and considering his desert location, a strict adherence to it. The author also uses images of deformity demonstrate the corruption of her main character, Nicholas Vidal; by providing him with four (4) nipples and a scared face the reader can have a visual representation of the character's tragic formation. In much the same manner, one can see such development within Frankenstein's creation. The monster's grotesque outward appearance reflects his corrupted creation. Using such imagery the author allows the readers to form a solid conception of the plight of their characters. Mary Shelly uses lovely poetic imagery in much the same way to define, and give three-dimensional presence to her characters. Such use of imagery for the purpose of character definition can most clearly be seen in her description of her monster: "His limbs were in proportion, and I had selected his features as beautiful. Beautiful, Great GOD! His yellow skin scarcely covered the work of muscles and arteries beneath; his hair was of a lustrous black and flowering; his teeth pearly whiteness; but these luxuriances only formed a more horrid contrast with his watery eyes, that seemed almost of the same colour as the dunwhite sockets in which they were set, his shriveled complexion and strait black lips." (Shelly, 56) In viewing the above passage, much of the same type of character definition can be seen; very similar to the manner in which Allende casts her deformed mold of her creature, Nicholas. Beyond merely presenting imagery to enhance the characters, the Allende also supplies background information in order to enhance the readers understanding of how the main character arrived at his current state. The author focuses on the main character's fatherless and loveless conception in order to accentuate how his development occurred. In a similar fashion Allende's character Nicholas Vidal was conceived in a similar fashion as Frankenstein's monster. Both are created and ultimately rejected by their creators who attempt to destroy them. These horrid monsters are invariably unwanted by their creators, thus their creators go to great lengths to attempt to snuff out the lives of the creations in order that they not wreak havoc upon the world. Both authors using this particular method of rejection to temper the souls of their monsters to the hardness of iron (Allende, 423). In each case this extreme form of temperament creates an almost supernatural being, filled with great destructive forces. Further extending upon the parallel roles of Nicholas and the Monster, a clear outcasting from society also aids in their murderous temperament. Each character finds himself rejected by society. The monster, from Frankenstein, is rejected by the family he assists solely due to his grotesque appearance. In much the same way Nicholas is assumed early on in his life by "decent folk" to become a criminal due to the telling marks on his face. It may well be said that though the Judge, in his strait laced figure, may not have directly created Nicholas, yet in reality he probably did in deed, like the rest of society, stereotyped and eventually outcast Nicholas based solely upon the scars on his face. In each case the author makes use of societies tendency to categorize and reject an individual based solely on their exterior shells, rather than probing the unique individual. To solely focus upon the main character within this story would be folly when making a true comparison to Frankenstein. Indeed the role of the judge has many overlapping qualities with Victor Frankenstein. Each man peruses, as both texts put it, their own "creature", to the points of virtual insanity. In doing

How to Care for Horses

How to Care for Horses Free Online Research Papers Emir Abd-el-Kader once said â€Å"By reason of his elegance, he resembles an image painted in a palace, though he is as majestic as the palace itself.† Horses are an important part of the world today. Their elegance, style beauty and grace make them one of the most favorable animals in the world and caring for them can be for pleasure or career. There are many factors in caring for the horses such as housing, nutrition, medical attention, exercise and blacksmith visits. To own a horse you must have the proper housing. Nowadays horses are mainly kept in a stable for most of their lives. This could be for convenience or so they are kept neat and tidy for shows. The horse must be provided ample room so they do not get cast (horse lies down too close to a wall and cannot get up). The standard measurement for a stall would be 12 feet by 12 feet. (Val Equine net 2006). Although it is not a necessity many horses do better when they are allowed pasture to graze upon. If there are multiple horses outside together it is essential to have 2 acres of land per horse. Horses also need proper nutrition. They should be provided water free choice(unlimited supply) and they should drink about 12 to 20 gallons per day. If you plan on keeping your horse in a stall you will need to refill the water bucket multiple times throughout the day, unless you have an automated water system or as needed. There are many different types of feed that are available but personally I would choose Nutrena Safe Choice Horse Feed because of it has high levels of protein and carbohydrates. You will also need hay. Orchard grass is usually the cheapest but you might want to use an alfalfa depending on the age and condition of the horse. Horses that are outside and being maintained as a show animal will need their pasture regulated (how much grass they consume) so they do not gain too much weight. Horses must have their vaccinations just as people would. There are many different types of vaccinations such as botulism, encephalomyelitis, influenza, Potomac horse fever; rabies and strangles just to name a few (Prinz 2005). Your horse will receive its first shots a few days after it is born and then will continue to need the vaccinations throughout his/her life. They also need to be dewormed every three to six weeks. You should always plan your whole year’s worming routine and mark each tube and the date to be given. This will help you to not miss any critical dates that might change the cycle.(Hayes 1999) Exercise is a vital part of the horse’s daily routine. There are lots of reasons for exercising horses kept in stalls besides keeping them mentally and physically healthy. Researchers from the University of Flordia have found improved leg bone and joint development in foals that were stalled but given regular exercise. Foals that were stalled without exercise rebounded in bone development when they were turned out to pasture. Weanlings stalled without exercise had less bone mass than those left on pasture. In older horses you must exercise to prevent illnesses such as colic. Ways of exercise include riding, lunging walking, and turnout(putting a horse outside for self exercise). Another thing that horses need is hoof care. A horses hooves should be routinely cared for every four to six weeks (Johnson 2003). There are many factors that should take into account while deciding when the time is right such as health of hooves, potential anticipated use, defects in gait and/or conformation and the injuries of the horse. If your horse is conformationally correct then the hooves should just be trimmed. However if there is a conformation fault or the horse is being used a lot(showing every weekend, etc.) you will need corrective shoeing which either fixes the conformation faults or lets the horse experience less shock onto the hooves. Although costly owning a horse can provide joy into your life. Everyday caring for the horse will give you satisfaction. It may seem like a lot of work in the beginning but eventually you will get into a routine. Yet you can never stop learning. Your horse should live in a clean, healthy environment cared for as if he/she were a king. Proposal - Essay Example As you said, the training would be done by you and not by others who quite frankly do not do it very well. Accordingly, our new brochures are being prepared. For instance, last year we spoke about my promotion to managerial position when we increased our sales team, if you would consider this to be now, then, I would propose that advertising ideas be done by someone like the person we previously met or alternately, it can be done by someone else who could do a good job, you or I could easily oversee and handle without any doubt. Then, between Brad, Robert and I, we could handle further duties. However, someone needs to steer the ship and be authoritative, since we need to introduce more decorum in the office. Because of these new demands, I have no problem with hiring or firing, I know it could get personal but if it is detrimental to the company, I have no alternative but to fire the underperforming person. When in business, I do not have an allegiance to anyone that is not performing well enough to satisfy the numbers we have projected. We also need to make sure we have people on a reserve basis so as not to have empty desks. To do this is not difficult, because there is a steady flow of talent available and we can interview and have back up without any problem. The need to obtain new accounts should be imperative, encouraged and propelled to the forefront with expected consequence. A new way of selling bullion is not difficult to do, we need to crush some numbers with Wilshire and rebook at a reasonable cost and selling prices, and this would bring us in line to compete with other companies. For us to be able to sell the Internet calls we get, this gives us the ability to get them into our fold for loads and conversion which is imperative for our long term goal and hence increase revenue of our company. When the going gets

Das Kapital by Karl Marx Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Das Kapital by Karl Marx - Essay Example The first volume of Das Kapital was published in 1867 at a time when the working conditions for industrial laborers were terrible and the division between the classes was growing increasingly more pronounced. It must not be forgotten that Das Kapital was a work born out of the industrial revolution. Marx begins the first chapter of Das Kapital with a statement concerning commodities. He defines a commodity as "an object outside us, a thing that by its properties satisfies human wants of sort or another" (125). It is interesting that Marx begins the text with a discussion and definition of a commodity and after several successive chapters, it is clear to see that the commodity is one of the main driving forces behind capitalism. The commodity itself, however, is only valued according to demand or other more ethereal conditions and thus it is a perfect item for the capitalist as it presents no fixed "price" in itself, but its value is rather determined by desire and the potential for profit. To backtrack for a moment, however, a more concise definition of commodity is contained within the idea of "use value." This refers to a commodity's value in how it will be used and how it is desired but this value, according to Marx, has little to do with the actual labor that went into the production of the item. Again, while it is not immediately clear at this early point in the text, the use value versus the idea of labor are important issues because there is more distinction between the two than one might initially think. For instance, something might have a very high use-value and be greatly desired. This desire leads the capitalist to make it expensive and the laborer who made the desired commodity is not paid what the desired commodity is worth, but rather is paid living wages while the surplus profits go directly to the capitalist since he owns the means of production. While that was a very brief, concise, but altogether limited description of the process behind commodities and use value, it is useful background information to frame the discussion as this analysis continues. After this introduction to commodities and use values in Das Kapital , the idea of exchange value becomes of equal importance. As Marx puts it in one of the important quotations from "Das Kapital", "As use values, commodities are, above all, of different qualities, but as exchange values they are merely different quantities, and consequently do not contain an atom of use value" (127). In other words, it is the proportion by which use values of one kind exchange for use values of another kind. This is a vital and fluctuating relationship and has less to do with the commodity than it might initially seem. In short, the common element in a commodity's exchange-value is simply the "value" of it. This means that it all comes down to labor. This is a common tactic Marx employs, at first there a number of daunting methods for scientifically extracting a conception of value but in the end, it all boils down to questions about work and

ICT Coursework Essay Example for Free

ICT Coursework Essay Virus, a special program which can do destructive also annoying things, it is a very tricky thing, because there are lots of different viruses, some of them might format your hard disk or they can make copies of itself without the user knowing about itetc. they all have different behaviours but all of them do things that you may not like to see to your computer. Before we know how to protect ourselves, we need to know how viruses work. Viruses are very annoying, because they spread. But they are not spreading in a normal way which you can see; they hide in the boot sector of a storage device, and this storage device can either be a floppy disk or CD-ROM that youve just borrowed from your friend. After it gets into your computer, it will do what the designer of this virus told it to do, it can be make millions of copies, or format the hard disketc. If so, how can people get away from this thing that you can not see? For the problem like this, people have made those anti-virus programs to find the virus, I strongly recommend you to have an anti-virus program, because you may never know what it actually in the file you are looking. In a PC, if a virus gets in, it will begin to spread it self, and do damage to it. Can we stop it? Yes, virus has always been a big problem to PCs, and there are many solutions as well, its just whether people actually do it or not. We can like have regular whole system virus scan e.g. every week. We can also use the floppy disk or CD-ROM that you trust, but even if you trust the source of it, you will still need to have a virus scan before you open it. Be careful with all the files that you have downloaded from the internet, because you may never know is it a clean file. Regular anti-virus program update will do as well. And if we can actually do these things properly, there shall be less problem form the virus. For a business company or school network, a firewall and the anti-virus program is needed. Viruses do not only go from storage devices, they can also come form other computers in your network. So if a single computer in your network gets the virus, all the computers on the network are in danger. So again, regular virus scan, be careful with all the files that you get from other placesetc. should help to keep the damage to minimum. For me, I do have those anti-virus programs and I do all the things Ive said above, with the anti-virus program, I think the damage is kept to a minimum; but I found a problem, if a virus gets into the anti-virus program it self and changes the configuration of the system, nothing will be known because the anti-virus program it self is the virus! However, virus has always been a problem for us, but if we do be aware of it, I am sure that the person who made the virus will soon find there is no way of getting a virus into our system. Finally, do never forget a virus can do anything to your computer, things can really go wrong if you dont keep an eye on you computer.

Ancient Civilizations :: History

While reading chapter one in our text book, I learned about the ancient civilizations that are no longer around. I noticed how different their cultures were from ours today. However, those are the foundations of who we are. Starting with the Paleolithic people, they were the groundwork for all humankind. Life for them was basic and simple. They didn?t wake up and wonder what they were going to wear. The men were hunters and gatherers, and the women were caregivers and producers. That is a theme relevant to even today. (men being dominant, etc?). As I read on, humans began to evolve after years and years. Soon humans were able to build structures using the post and lintel system. It seems the more we evolved the more we learned, and the more survival of the fittest played a part in the development of humans. I found the story of Gilgamesh very interesting. The fact he was seeking immortality but unable to attain it, represent humans always wanting things they can?t have. This is something everyone can relate to. It also incorporated the flood/ark part which I thought might have a connection with Noah?s ark ? especially since the time periods were very similar. One thing that sparked my curiosity, was how all of the ancient civilizations used hieroglyphics or symbols to communicate in writing. Today, many countries and cultures do not. They use the letters for their words and phrases. In fact, hieroglyphics is not really used in any place. The closest thing is probably Hebrew and Arabic which were derived from the ancient civilizations. Although not in America so much, religion is still a prevalent factor in cultures today just like they were in Egypt and Babylon. The old Kingdom had a very interesting method of ?judgement.? The Book of Dead was the evaluation was a huge part of their lives. Similar to our judgments found in some religions today. I think the middle kingdom was a time to learn and discover new theories and methods and time to figure out what works and what doesn?t. Prince Mentuhotep II was the leader and reunited Upper and lower Egypt. This was a great accomplishment because it brought peace and enabled the culture to prosper. The impression I got from the Old Kingdom to New, was that the old kingdom maintained traditions in the books.

Carrier Liability Under Various Shipping Rules Essay

From the perspective of the international shipping industry, the globe is divided into nations that own cargo and nations that own ships; the majority of nations fall into both categories. Among such differing interests exists great potential for conflict regarding damage to, loss of, or delay in the arrival of sea cargo and how the risks for such potentialities should be allocated among the parties. The issues at the base of the potential conflicts include: which party bears the risk; which risk allocation rules apply; to what extent is the carrier or shipowner liable for damage or loss while the cargo is in its possession; and to what extent should government be involved in the regulation of private transactions between private parties in attempting to determine what the extent of liability is for each party. Sea-going societies have promulgated maritime laws regarding the carriage of goods at sea since before the birth of Christ. As early as the Roman Empire, through the Middle Ages with the advent of the Law Merchant, the laws of Visby, Oleron and Hansa Cities, shipper and carrier were considered joint venturers, sharing in both the risks and the rewards of the cargo delivery. Shippers would travel on board during the journey to oversee the safety of their cargo, while carriers were obligated to provide a seaworthy ship and a competent crew. In the event the of the ship being lost at sea, the shipper and the carrier shared in the misfortune. However, as long as carriers have accepted cargo on behalf of shippers, conflict over the economic allocation of risk and liability has existed. As early as the latter decades of the 17th century, shippers and carriers used Lloyd’s Coffee shop in London as a meeting place to hammer out the provisions for general maritime policies of insurance and the insured risks for loss or damage to the shippers’ cargo. Eventually, during the 1800s, the interests further diverged as carriers formed organizations to protect against liability, such as the Shipowners Mutual Protection Society and the first modern protection and indemnity (â€Å"P&I†) club, the Steamship Owners Mutual Protection and Indemnity Association. As recently as the mid-20th century, shippers and carriers were still essentially joint venturers sharing the risks and rewards of their transactions. This remained a logical arrangement in light of the vagaries of the sea and dangers such as natural disaster, incompetent crews and masters, attacks by warring nations and pirates, antiquated communications and navigational aids and equipment, or even volatile political situations. Operating in such an environment of constant peril, the risks to the interests of both the shipper and carrier were for all intents and purposes, equal. Even with centuries of conflict and attempts at uniform regulation, the law regarding the liabilities and rights of carriers and shippers for the loss of or damage to goods at sea remains largely unsettled. As ocean shipping continues to grow as an industry, maintaining its importance to the global economy, uniformity of law regarding carrier liability remains elusive. With the first decade of the 21st century behind us, and much political instability across the globe, it is imperative that a uniform and consistent body of law be established by the world’s seagoing nations addressing the legal rights and liabilities of shippers and carriers.

Swift, Orwell, and King Standing against the Injustices...

Introduction Jonathan Swift and Martin Luther King never compromised their principles even if it might have been practical and expedient to do so, while George Orwell admitted to having done so once, only with great reluctance and regret. At all times, King was ready to sacrifice his life for his principles and finally did so in 1968, while Orwell actually fought for his. Both of these men were in fact heroic examples of activists and intellectuals who took a stand for what they believed right and never gave up or retreated. King faced death many times, and was almost assassinated in Birmingham in 1963, and also went to jail many times for his principles. In the end, he led the civil rights movement to victory in the United States, accomplishing more than any black leader before or since. His Letter from a Birmingham Jail in 1963 was a classic exposition of equal rights and freedom for all human beings, just as Orwells short story Shooting and Elephant was a principled denunciation of British imp erialism. Swift was not nearly as great a hero and moral example as King and Orwell, who took a firm and principled stand against the major injustices of their time. His Modest Proposal was a strong satirical attack against British imperialism in Ireland, though, and the extreme poverty, hunger and oppression faced by the inhabitants of that island. This became his most famous essay, in fact, and one that is still read today as a brilliant example of satire and sarcasm,Show MoreRelatedGeorge Orwell23689 Words   |  95 PagesGeorge Orwell England Your England As I write, highly civilized human beings are flying overhead, trying to kill me. They do not feel any enmity against me as an individual, nor I against them. They are ‘only doing their duty’, as the saying goes.
